Earth Girl - Second Song of the Day

Development Update
October 20, 2026

The latest version of the NYA Apps gets a major revision that incorporates more of the features of the website plus adds Neil Young Radio, a new 24-hr commercial free hi-def radio station available only to paid members.

The home page now has our interactive 4-drawer file cabinet and the Neil Young Radio button, making it faster to get to your content of choice. The audio player remains at the bottom of the screen; tapping on it reveals a second screen with more controls. For those using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you’ll see a new tab to listen to Neil Young Radio in your car.

(To Android Users:  The Android app is awaiting Google's approval.  While Apple approves our submissions in about a day, Google often takes several days to a week.  Both apps were submitted last Friday.)

Neil Young Radio

We are excited to announce that Neil Young Radio is coming to the Archives. It's for those times when you just want to listen to Neil's music nonstop at the push of a button. Simply tap the radio button on your app, website, on your car and you will be able to experience music selected randomly from his entire catalog, just like a dedicated radio station. There will also be occasional commentaries from Neil about …

NYA Moves from
AWS to Digital Ocean

Over the past year Neil has removed his records, CDs, and streaming music from Amazon in protest of Jeff Bezos’ personal and financial support of Donald Trump and his destruction of the once great Washington Post newspaper.

Now, the final connection to Amazon, Amazon Web Services (AWS), the division of Amazon that hosted our website and apps, has been terminated. NYA is now running on DigitalOcean.

Over the past two months, NYA’s software team planned …

AWS MIGRATION CONTINUES!

I want to let you know that our transition from AWS (Amazon Web Services) to Digital Ocean to host the NYA infrastructure is proceeding on schedule and should be completed in a few more weeks. We appreciate the support Digital Ocean has provided to NYA to expedite this move.

While migrating a massive high-resolution library and site like NYA is a significant and costly undertaking, the move to Digital Ocean aligns with my need for …

Development Update

NYA recently added two new file drawers to house Outtakes and music from Friends & Families. This improves usability and provides a way to easily add new content and for you to easily find it. The new content can be accessed in the apps from the Menu. We are still working out a few bugs related to some tracks in the Outtakes drawer not playing, and that should be corrected within the next couple of …

While we continue to promote the work of independent journalists by posting their work in our opinion sections, Viewpoint, Democracy and American Voices, we are sensitive to those that come to NYA for the music and prefer to avoid the political news. July Is Nigh...

by Rick Shearer aka Proto-Rustie

PART ONE

This wonderful tale originally appeared on Hyperrust.org in June and July 1998. Neil had been promising the release of the first volume of his Archives for a good while, and had most recently been saying it would be released “in July”. Rick Shearer, it seems, took him at his word…
For those who don’t know, the “Missing 6” were six of Neil’s albums which had at that …

Leaving there too soon
The hidden secrets of the Sugar Mountain website

By Robert Broadfoot

I don’t know about you, but I certainly get the impression that the Neil fan community is incredibly well served. I ought to admit up front that I am not too familiar with what happens with other artists out there. But I somehow doubt there is a site anywhere dedicated to a major artist which is as wide-ranging and replete with information, actual playable hi-res music, films, live shows and ‘ephemera’, as …

In Part 1 – Here We Are In The Years, David Clarke looked at how the Neil Young Appreciation Society was originally founded together with Paul Makos, and the very first issue of the society magazine Broken Arrow published in August 1981.

By the time the second issue of Broken Arrow Magazine was in preparation in late summer 1981, a team had been assembled. Andy Cox was now fully on board, Grahame …

Living on the left side too
An interview with NYA
member Terry Erickson of the Squires – Part 2

Interview by Robert Broadfoot

Terry Erickson knew Neil from Fort William, Ontario when Neil played there briefly with the Squires in the early 1960s. Terry was also with Neil on that famous last run down the long decline near Blind River, in Neil’s hearse Mort in June 1965. And Terry was the man who took Neil to Toronto on the back of his Honda 90 for the next chapter of both their musical careers.
In the first part of …

“It’s Neil magic” – for Judy Greenberg on her birthday, March 10

I never dreamed I would start the new year without my dear friend, Judy Greenberg. She left this earth on December 15, 2025. She called me in early December and told me about her grave diagnosis. She had advanced pancreatic cancer and did not have long to live. I took this news really hard but tried to be strong for her. I was blessed to be able to tell her that I loved her and …

A TRIBUTE TO THE “OLD MAN” – NEIL YOUNG @ 80

On October 16th 2025, my band Harvest stepped onto the stage of Ireland’s National Concert Hall alongside the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and a specially assembled choir – the ‘Hearts of Gold’ – to celebrate Neil Young’s 80th birthday. Together, we performed 19 of Neil’s greatest songs to an audience of 1,200 people. It was an astonishing event – an experience that surpassed anything we had imagined.

How did this spectacle come to pass? It all …

I first met Judy Greenberg in her role as moderator of the Members section of the Neil
Young Archives (NYA) in July of 2021. Judy had asked the question “Can a song
change the world?” I wrote a response titled “Neil Young Sang Songs That Changed My
World”. While helping me edit my response we learned that we lived only a 25 minute
drive apart, and we continued our communication after my article was completed,

Neil on Fire
by Kim Lindberg

My very first Neil Young show was in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 28, 1993, with Booker T. & The MGs. Neil had not performed in Sweden in over ten years, so the frontman of the support act said, in the end of one of their own songs, “I know you’ve been waiting for this a long time,” and then sang, still within their own song, “Tonight’s the night…” The front man of the support act …

I've always smiled whenever I heard the lyrics of Neil's song T-Bone because I believe I know what inspired it. Perhaps this story may either spoil your love of it or enhance your understanding. For me, it's one of my treasured bits of Neil trivia and memories from my youth.

In 1974, at the age of 14, I worked at the Bella Vista and Alex's Restaurants along Skyline Blvd. on Kings Mountain in Woodside, California. …

Language fails me, so I’ll say just this. Millions of folks hold Neil Young close and I have only grown more appreciative of his profound artistry over decades….he has given me the exhilaration in college of running home with a bootleg album in 1971 with such joy…..and now in 2024 an equally epic experience of thankfulness and completeness when Robert, my 5 year old grandson, the joy of my life, only wants to hear ‘Rockin’ …

Discovering Neil Young
by John Nogowski

Calling them “entry points” seems way too tech-ey for me. But what else to call a song, a program, whatever it is that moves you into the “fan” category?

In the case of Bruce Springsteen, all it took was hearing an advance tape of “Born To Run” on WBCN months before the album came out. With Roxy Music, it was hearing “Out Of The Blue” getting out of work and getting the album, then realizing …

Here We Are In The Years
A History of the Neil Young Appreciation Society
and Broken Arrow Magazine

By David Clarke

Come with us if you will to a dim and distant past, to England in 1978. There was no internet, no world wide web, no digital cameras, mobile phones, or CD recorders and certainly no established Neil Young fan groups. Margaret Thatcher’s conservative Britain was looming on the horizon and I had moved from the English Midlands down to London to take up a new assignment as divisional accountant for our company’s …

There were a pair of shows at the much larger Catalyst in Santa …

Why Neil Young?
by Bob Baracani

Sitting in my friend John’s car, snapping in our seatbelts before heading out for lunch, John asked me, “Why Neil Young?” I had never thought about the why’s of being a fan of Neil, so an answer didn’t readily come to mind. I lowered my head, thought about it, and broadening the question, I asked myself, “Why do we prefer some artists over others?” After some thought, I realized that we appreciate artists that make …

Hi, I am Mike from Ventura, California. I have been a fan of Neil Young since junior year in high school. The first concert was a blast. As soon as we got the okay, we lit three! We …

Time Fades Away

I would like to confess that the first time I ever heard the album Time Fades Away, it changed my entire life. Its message was emotionally harsh, yet comforting, and the perfect music to hear at that point in my life. For me, it's one of the most significant works of art I found that came close to explaining what it's like to live with depression and neurodivergence and still keep your head above water …
