Earth Girl - Second Song of the Day

The Magic in Bridgeport
by Roger Klepper

My Neil Young journey began with Live Rust in my early teens, but I had only experienced Crazy Horse live for a pair of Alchemy shows in NYC in 2012. Then many, many years of hope went by that the Horse would ride again. Now the Love Earth Tour is here, along with all the anticipation and uncertainty. What will the playlists look like? Will the magic still be there?

I caught the first night …

Always Old Ways
by Bjørn Arne Smestad

The first LPs I bought were Trans and Re-ac-tor, both from Narvesen at Løvebakken in Stortingsgata, Oslo, Norway, before I really started diving into the glories of the 70s.
Since then, each new album has been like a surprise package. There wasn't much that could beat the feeling of opening a new LP, later CD, and hearing the music for the first time.

The release I remember with the greatest pleasure is perhaps Old Ways …

Hi fellow Members,

I'm a long time Mayor, Supervisor, and principal owner of the town of Bluesville! (Just across the Emmy Lou Memorial Bridge and over the hill from scenic downtown Greendale). My administration was responsible for insisting our new bridge was an authentic re-creation! I'm just upriver from the ELMB. That smell permeating the valley is from our industrial park. I know that other communities have long chastised us for our strip clubs, pool …

Two Degrees
of Separation
by Herb Hesse

Over the course of 40 years I have seen Neil in concert over 50 times. Often, multiple dates on the same tours at varied venues throughout the Northeast. The setlist varies ever so slightly, if at all, from show to show. But that's ok with me. It's all one song after all. Crazy Horse has always been my favorite way to enjoy Neil. Raw and Ragged. The closest I've ever been, physically, was row C, …

A Memorable
Night With The Horse
by Tony Amuro

I saw Neil Young with Crazy Horse on the Alchemy Tour in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on December 4, 2012. Neil had the GA standing section in front of the stage, so I got to be front row center (in front of the big microphone) for Patti Smith and then The Horse. It was transcendent!

The sonic explorations alone… I think if you weren’t a hardcore fan, you probably wouldn’t appreciate how great they were, but they …

Buffalo Springfield
at Liberty Hall 1968
by Mike Shenk

This is my memory of the Buffalo Springfield concert at Liberty Hall in El Paso, Texas, February 9, 1968. I remember it was held during the week of “school night,” and I was barely 16 years old. We had to talk our parents into letting us attend. The concert opened with a local group named Iron Butterfly. No, not that Iron Butterfly. Liberty Hall holds maybe 2,000 people and it was about 1/2 full. Buffalo …

My name is Phil Piles. I joined Neil Young Archives at its inception. I hear Bob Young’s audio book of Mind Golf as a rare collectors’ item for all 25,000 NYA members. It includes the song, Hey America. No recorded version is available on an album, at least not yet. Bob sings the song and plays guitar with his band and Neil accompanies on harmonica and vocal harmonies. The song lyric is currently relevant, a …

The Luck
of the Cinnamon Girl
by Terry P. Anderson

One day in my Literature class, I wrote across the top of the chalkboard: “Neil Young Will Rock the Greek Theatre on 9/12/2000!” Serendipitously, one of my students was listening to the radio on her way home and heard them announcing they were giving away two free tickets to the Neil Young concert on September 12, 2000, at the Greek Theatre to the 4th caller. Well, as luck would have it, she was the 4th …

What Neil Has
Given Me
by Stefano Frollano

Sunday November 12 was the 78th birthday of Neil Young, the artist I love most.

Today, however, beyond the celebration, I want to remember what Neil represents for me, and not just for me, but also for the opportunity he gave me over the years to meet many friends: those that are still there and those that I will never forget -- like Fabio Pellegrini, who, among the many things we’ve done together, wrote a …

Back in the Daze
by Paul Dionne

Back in the daze of being a teen from age 16-18, my traveling buddy and I were traveling the New England roads, especially to Boston, discovering music, and buying the great music from the past and the present day. I’m talking about the years between 1975 through 1978 or so, moving from rock & roll to going into "punk". Part of my concert experience was going to see the Stills-Young Band in Boston in 1976, …

I Was So Lucky
by Mike Egan

I have been lucky to see Neil the times I did. My first was the Time Fades Away tour. One show I saw was Neil with Promise of the Real in La Jolla, California, on October 13, 2015. I went with my lifetime friend, Dave Castillo. We have been pals since first grade, and he is also a big Neil fan. We knew it was open seating, which I thought was strange, so we planned …

Neil Has Always Been With Me
by Steven Gieseler

My mum and my biological father both listened to Neil Young, but especially him, since he was a huge fan. My mom has videos of me when I was 16 months old, and in some scenes you can hear CSNY’s Country Girl in the background.

For me, the oldest song I remember is Helpless. I’m pretty sure it was the version from The Last Waltz because I often watched a video of Neil playing it. …

Neil’s Role in Our Lives
by Tom Russell

I’ve been a fan of rock and roll music since growing up in Sacramento, California, in the 60’s and 70’s. We had access to all the music happening in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The music was central to my formative years. And so was Neil. I’ve lived my adult life in Oregon where I met my wife Vicki 44 years ago, and where we raised our kids and shared our experiences in life. …

Neil, my brother, and me
by Sveinesund Øvregård

There he sits. And he looks exactly like the pictures I had seen. Worn pants, long black hair, a mysterious twinkle in his eye, and an almost constant crooked smile. The chair he's sitting on seems way too small, and his legs follow the rhythm of the guitar in an oddly syncopated way. He is alone. Solo. Next to him, there's a small table with two glasses of water, one for thirst and the other …

A Memorable
Philly Concert

Part 1:
Back in Winter 1983, the Philly area had a blizzard - the same day of a Neil Young show …

Neil Young & Promise of the Real in Napa Valley, CA

It’s a long drive from Orange County, CA, to Napa Valley, CA, also known as Wine Country, about 450 miles each way. When I finally arrived in Napa, I felt kind of lost, like I was driving around in a very small farm town that never ended. The town was surrounded by more and more small farming …

Recollections of Neil:
July 4, 1976
by Arthur Schwartz

In 1976 I was a student at the University of Buffalo. That summer, Neil and Stephen Stills were touring together (Stills-Young Band) and amazingly they were going to hit both Niagara Falls and Rochester, New York. Of course I bought tickets for both concerts

The Niagara Falls concert was at the Convention Center on July 4th (America's 200th Anniversary) and so I headed out to the concert early and found myself hanging out by the …

A North Ontario

This time of year brings cold hands and warm hearts, and reunions of friends and loved ones sharing memories of Christmases past and sharing great food. Oh, the food. One delicious traditional Christmas Eve dinner up here features tourtiere, a festive meat pie with French Canadian origins. One Christmas Eve, with visions of tourtiere dancing in my head, crisscrossing Ontario backroads, I missed the turnoff to Highway 7. I knew that if I got …

Neil Led Me Back
Home
by Carlos Barros

A girl introduced me to the album 4 Way Street (Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) when I was 16. I remember it like it was yesterday, beautiful songs and vocal harmonies. But what definitely impressed me was Neil’s interpretation of On The Way Home. I had been away from home for a while, all my feelings were mixed together, and this song led me to feel more peaceful, more at home. And to this day …

Neil Young Coastal

Neil went on the road to do a solo tour called the Coastal Tour, with 15 shows along the California coast. I saw his show in Napa, California, on July 23, 2023, at the Oxbow RiverStage in Napa, along the Napa River and grapes. The outdoor theater is a small venue – it holds about 4,000 – but seems so much smaller. Great place to see a concert – no bad seats in the house. …
