For decades, I have gotten older alongside every one of you. During those decades Neil’s music has resonated with me in every phase of my life.
Judy Greenberg posed a question on one of the Neil Young social media groups asking if we would share a memorable show. Here is one of my stories.
Part 1:
Back in Winter 1983, the Philly area had a blizzard – the same day of a Neil Young show at my beloved Philadelphia Spectrum. Now remember, these were the days you had to rely on radio stations such as WYSP or WMMR for concert updates and any postponements.
Living in the Warminster, PA area my brother David & I tried to drive to the show but kept getting stuck in the snow in his 1970’s Ford Maverick so we decided to take the train at the Hatboro, PA train station. There were a few NY diehards doing the same thing we were doing & they had a transistor radio. The train had to keep slowing down because the snow was really bad.
We were pulling into Reading Terminal when the concert announcement came in that it was postponed. We didn’t even get off the train.
Part 2:
The concert was rescheduled to August 29, 1983. The rescheduled show went on. Neil played some acoustic songs, followed by a TRANS set, but then the unthinkable happened. His final set was the Shocking Pinks. He was booed by the crowd! I wonder if Neil remembers that.
Personally, I was thrilled to hear all his new musical directions. It was the first & only time I ever heard Uncle Neil get booed.
This was one of my favorite concert memories (the blizzard train ride and the show, not the booing)
