This 1941 Martin D-18 is another guitar that Neil got from GTR in Nashville in the late ‘60s. With its mahogany back and sides and scalloped braces, it has a wonderful tone—rich and full. He has played it a lot both in recording and shows.
It has had a hard life though. Once down at the ranch, early on, I opened the case and found a crack that ran the full length of the upper bout. My repair has held all these years. More recently, I got a call saying there had been a leak in the skylight over the bed in Neil’s bus and unfortunately, the D-18 was right under it, filling the guitar to the top with water. This required me to make a lot of major repairs. All is fine now.
