SOUTHERN MAN

Hello, on the studio versions of Southern Man (After The Gold Rush):

After first chorus and verses are sung, when double time starts, the first lick?
Did Neil play it on EAD strings 8-10-12 or ADG 3-5-7 position?
This might be an impossible proposition to answer.
I have a debate going with a few of us guitar nerds.

Thanx In Advance
NY Stunt Double from Winnipeg

I’ll take a listen and…
LOVE Neil
Thanks
BE WELL

CALCULATIONS

Neil,

Have you ever calculated the total number of songs you have written and recorded for Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and your solo albums, and out of that massive catalog, how do you decide which chestnuts to perform on your most recent tours?

Barry R

No, I haven’t
Thanks

THE SOUL OF AMERICA

Hi Neil~

Thank you and all of the performers at Farm Aid. As always, a great time. You mentioned a few things at the press conference that resonated. Without any doubt, farmers are the soul of our existence. You also mentioned voting, particularly at this wonky time. It is easy for me to support a local farmer; however, trusting a politician is a whole other thing. Do I vote on principles or political affiliations? Hoping to become more educated.

Much love,
Linda

PS~ Love Earth Girl….

Thanks Linda Vote your soul…how you feel
Be well

‘SUMMER OF 26’

Hi Neil,
Thank you for an amazing show in Philly. In particular, that might have been one of the best performances of “Powderfinger” that I’ve heard, and it was obvious that you were tapping into something. How do you continue to find inspiration in songs that you’ve played hundreds or thousands of times?

Thanks for the Powderfinger mention. It might be in ‘Summer of 26’
Be well
LOVE Neil

PHILLYO CANADA

Hey Neil,

About a week ago, I had the chance to take the train down to Philly to see you play live. I ended up sitting next to two longtime fans of yours, Paul and Margie, both lovely people.

I was born and grew up in Iran, and my family and I have called Canada home for about twelve years now. I live in New York these days, moved here for graduate school, but your performance that night reminded me just how beautiful Canada is, and how much I miss home.

When I moved to New York, I didn’t bring much with me. Personal space isn’t exactly something you get a lot of here. But I did bring a massive, seven-foot-wide Canadian flag, and I think my flag flew a little higher that night.

Your music has meant a great deal to me, especially lately, during a period of my life with a lot of change, a lot of goodbyes, and a lot of new beginnings.

Thank you for the music, and for everything you do.

In kindness,
Ilia

Thanks llia
Oh Canada!!
Be well

SECOND SONG

Hi Neil,

I hope you’re doing well, my name is Sante and i writing from Italy—from a small village in the middle in the Po Valley, near the border between Lombardy and Emilia. As i write this I have “day after day” and the rest of the latest album Second Song playing in the background on NYA, it’s perfect for the autumn weather awaiting us here, with its fog and cold days.

I had already bought tickets for your concert here last year; I was so happy to see you live once again after Dublin 2025—an occasion where I celebrated my June 26th birthday with a concert trip I’ll never forget.

I’ve already talked too much-sorry—so to avoid boring you, I’ll get straight to the question: during the 2013 concerts with Crazy Horse—I was there in Locarno and Lucca—you regularly played a couple of songs I really liked (Singer Without a Song and Hole in the Sky). Is there a chance we might hear them perhaps on Archives Vol. 4?

I hope there’s a chance to see you around here again, you guys were great at Farm Aid other week!

Ciao!

We may play ’em but I don’t know….
Hope to see you there!
Thanks
Be well
LOVE Neil

CONNECTION TO OUR PLANET

Dear Neil,

Thank you for relentlessly bringing to light our connection to our planet … and of course, what is happening to it.

Right there for all of us to hear in so many of your songs! “Be the Rain.” Wow!

I just drove from Northern Michigan to Philadelphia to be at your September 24th show.

Yep. Twenty-five hours of driving over three days.
It was totally worth it!!!

(I stopped flying eight years ago when I learned how horrible it is for the environment. Each seat on each flight is responsible for adding one ton of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere where it will remain for thousands of years!)

When you admired the wooden structure of the Mann Performance Center, people looked up and noticed it. To me, it felt like you were paying your respect to the (likely Canadian!) trees. The trees give us so much.

And so do you!

I am an architect. After 30+ years of designing new homes, I have stopped. They are too resource-intense! We have plenty of existing structures that only need to be given a new life. That’s where my focus is now.

A dream of mine is to meet with you and Daryl and brainstorm ways to empower people to be advocates for renewable energy. Especially young people.

I feel certain that the quickest way out of this mess is to make it easy (and fun!) for humans to stop burning fossil fuels.

My husband (Woody) and I would love to make the drive from Michigan to Canada. Just say the word! 😊

FOREVER GRATEFUL

Your newly released song “Soon I Might Be Going” is a heart-wrenching tear-jerker. The video is so well done. We’re all behind the wheel driving this. “The bears are trying to hibernate, but they can’t find where to go.…”
Horrible!

But I am optimistic that there is still time to stave off the worst effects of climate change. We can do it.

I am forever grateful for you. Thank you for sharing your beautiful gifts with us.
Love,
Suzannah

I’ll do the best I can Suzannah!
Thanks

‘SECOND SONG’

Neil, hello, and thank you for the Beautiful ‘Second Song’ album. It’s Beautiful man, one long Beautiful story, and all the songs on it make me Feel … been a long time that I could say that about any album, by any artist … isn’t that the point of art, to make you Feel.…

And then to top it off, you release two videos of the songs with footage from your past, with Carrie riding her horse and you driving your Willys, it choked me up, thank you for allowing us to ride with you, Neil … I’m aware of how difficult, or joyful, it must have been for you to watch your past … maybe the album should have been named ‘Out Of The Past’ … when Bob Mitchum uttered those seminal words to Jane Greer, “Baby I Don’t Care”… love you brother, thank you for making me Feel again.…

Paul

PAUL
Thanks man…I appreciate those words!
Be well

TIME FADES AWAY

Hi.

I am sitting here as a subscriber in your app and I am listening to the “Time Fades Away” album.
I was 12 when that album came out and I had it right off.

That was a tough time for me.

I loved it then, but years went by and I think I played the Springfield and earlier albums, and when my records were gone I forgot about that album.

But I put side two on and man it’s a gem.
Especially “The Bridge.”
I do believe it’s my favorite album you did now as it was in ’73.
Don’t ask me why, but I won’t be denied because it’s an album that just works.

Thank you.
I appreciate the cool music and honesty.
And your love for disabled people.
We are quite enabled in showing love my friend.

Never give up and God bless you.
Bruce.

Thanks Bruce. Much appreciated.
Be well
LOVE Neil

‘THE WEIGHT OF INACTION’

Hello Neil, Daryl and all at NYA!

Well, I’ve hurt myself, again!
I had a thought, lying in bed, a poem actually, and I decided to roll over and grab my phone off of my nightstand. I heard a loud click and then a really loud pop. I grabbed the phone wrote what I had in mind and then fell asleep.

Next morning it was difficult to walk. My right leg was wonky and didn’t do what I told it to do. Turns out it was a nerve issue coming off my back causing the electrical impulses from my brain to be misconstrued.

Anyway, I am a case in progress. So, I’ve been writing and puttering around the cave. When I heard Soon I Might Be Going, it hit hard. The words, the road and clouds. What a long, strange trip it has been for both of us, all of us.

I get so depressed hearing stupid political nonsense, space talk and news about The War, when Earth, our home is crumbling under the weight of inaction. There are more important things to get done. Instead of dividing people, unifying people makes more sense.

That’s just my opinion.

Anyway, I’m hoping you won’t be leaving soon. You are the voice of many. The new album is, like one letter said, like a dream.

Long may you run!

-Mudflow Mike

Hey Mike
I’m stickng around!
“the weight of inaction”,
a great phrase…

STRONG SOUTHWEST WIND

Greetings Neil

I woke up with the melody of the Second Song stuck in my head.
Later, I was preparing for a long trip heading into a strong Southwest wind. Music important. I forgot my large speaker. I had to use my new phone to listen to your album, Second Song. Coming out of the phone, it gave off a different focus. It came through clearly, with a new nuance to the overall story.

When I was doing soundtracks, in the studio we would listen on a cheap speaker, like a TV speaker, as the audience would.

After the final playback, after the massive speakers, did you check it on a phone?
Lloyd Muskoka

P.S. After I sent my painting of the horse to the Contrarian, I must have stepped in horseshit. Don’t spook the horse.

Lloyd,
I did not use the phone!
…

Neil

I meant no ill will in my PS in my last letter. I was referring to the legend, as it was when you recorded “Don’t Spook the Horse.”

Lloyd

No prob Lloyd
Thanks

Be well
Neil
