TIMES ARE HARD

Hi there, I am a fan for many years. I grew up in Santa Monica. Born in 1962 I have been following you for a long time. A democrat I agree with your views. I know live in Carpinteria and times are hard. Thank you for always supporting the voices of us that can’t afford to help but want to.

Thanks to you

WE CAN DO THIS!

Greetings Neil,

It will be an interesting time the next few weeks with global political developments—hopefully with positive outcomes at least on some voting fronts. It does seem like America is wanting change—but we are sure the political beast that has made its nest will not move without a fight. So I do hope the US is prepared to organize more and activate.

On a positive front I do want you to know that the fight on climate change is becoming more and more possible—but political blocks are now more the problem than actual technical and life changes. For example I have been working on global methane emissions—we now have a practical plan in place with the Global Methane Hub—and are measuring, informing and mitigating at the global level. The part that I am focused on is landfill methane emissions and global mitigation. We have a new database and are now working with Latin America groups at high levels to bring investment into many highly populated areas that do not have landfill methane extraction. Met last week with a group from New Delhi, India who represent women waste-pickers. More than 20 million people—mostly women—work in landfills across the world picking and recycling waste. We discussed methane mitigation and how to improve and make recycling work safer for so many of these women workers, mostly informal and low-paid. It was very positive, as we did have government officials. I also presented some research on China, where in less than 20 years, they have transformed their entire waste sector and now have some of the best methane mitigation within their over 4,000 landfills.

A lot of global work moving into Oil and Gas, Cattle, and Waste Water treatment—three more industries with high methane mitigation. There are two companies supplying a lot of the satellite methane emission data: GHGsat (a Canadian company) and Carbon Mapper. We can see the large emitters now, so with the right political will, we can make the investments and mitigate. If we can get this mitigation to at least 30 percent methane reduction at the global level, in 10 years we could see up to one degree on average cooling. So I do want people to know that there is hope and there is a plan—the doom and gloom needs to find the sun!

On that note, it was cool read that you thought the Digger movie was the best you ever saw. I am sure Brando would agree, especially on a night sitting by the fire, knowing the danger of the current political space we currently are embedded within. I never thought I would see Neil coming together with Tom Cruise with thumbs up, but it is a sign of the times indeed. Glad to see Tom finding that role.

Lastly, I just watched your new video for I’ll Love You Forever, and at first I was just listening to the music watching the road go by. And as I watched it, a feeling came over me like I was dreaming. I thought, wait a second—what is going on—why am I feeling this way watching the video? Then as I watched more I realized—wow—this is Goulais River, Haviland Bay, Harmony Bay and Batchewana Bay along the highway. The place I grew up and drove a few thousand times. When I seen “the causeway,” which is the first time the 17 hits Lake Superior, is Haviland Bay and then the road goes around “the rock cut” (great fishing off the point) and heads to Harmony Bay (my grandfather’s ashes are spread on that mountain where the rock cut is located), I knew for sure it was not me dreaming—it was actually where the video was coming from. It was like you were pulling video from my memory—it was a very strange feeling. Quite surreal! And quite the trip indeed—will love you forever!

Thank you for all the gifts of your music over these years. Could not have done this life and been in this time without your music—or at least not become the person I am—which I think on some level is okay. Although last week, when I looked into the face of the millions of waste-pickers and their representatives from some of the poorest in the world, I felt sad—very ashamed and angry! —but at least I feel it and it does matter.

We can do this!

TIMELINE

Dear Neil-

This isn’t a short note, so slow it down….

Your team gifted us with 3/24/73 Long Beach, Stray Gators w/Nash and Croz on the timeline today. I asked for it because there is no recording in circulation: a complete mystery. And to that I say, “wow and thanks.” There are some really great and unexpected performances. “Time Fades Away” has a really interesting musical intro. “New Mama” was really stellar with a fantastic outro. A real groove! Nash and Croz sang well, not as strained as on the TFA album. So great to hear them on “Alabama.” Ben sang fine as well. “Southern Man”—wow. That double time was really popping.

Having been a fan for so long, it’s really unusual to hear new things I have not heard before. Songs with unique energy. Yes, this show was right in the middle of the recorded “Time Fades Away” recorded show, but this show really stands apart. “Yonder Stands The Sinner” was practically a rehearsed studio take here compared with the released version from Seattle a few days before. Sure, there were plenty of shambolic moments in this show, but there was a lot of revelatory stuff, too. “Cinnamon Girl” with the “Born To Run”/false ending. This really was a gift, and I wanted to just let you know that. It’s a such a strange feeling to hear something totally new to me and to feel a whole new window into your art. You might not want to go back there, but I’m glad your team did. It’s visceral, Neil.

But it’s 2026 and you are fully in the present. Even your last album, Second Song, which I really FEEL, is ancient history to you, apparently. I think I will be listening to “Soon I Might Be Going” years after you have forgotten it. It is special. The Chrome Hearts really came together on it. Please enjoy your gift, which is to be in your moment right now.

Now back to the regularly scheduled moment….
Omar

Thanks Omar!

QUESTIONS!

Hi Neil,

Just back from Ireland. Do you have (I think you do) Irish heritage?

What’s the release date of Volume 4?

When do you think you will decide if a tour is on the cards to Europe, etc. or even Aust.?

What was the best advice Elliot ever gave you, and if you took it, did it work out?

Did you ever go against what Elliot said to do?

The changes in genre you did in the eighties: is there anything cooking in your mind to do vastly different to recent releases? Sometimes on some of your songs I can feel your tendency to get a real jazz feel to it. Do you feel that too?

Second Song has a subdue feel to it—resignation, in fact—is that what you were going for?

Why does it take so long to get LPs out these days? You did Ohio in 14 days: is that true?

Did you play all the lead on Woodstock on the CSNY LP? It’s got a very funky beat to it. Whose idea was it to tear down Joni’s version and push it to hard rock even? It’s my favorite on that along with Country Girl. Did you ever play country Girl live?

Enough of my probing questions—how are you, anyway?

Regards
Steve Downunder ( McEvoy )

Thanks Steve

PHILADELPHIA

the holy church of real live music

Hello Neil,

I would just like to thank you for the concert in Philadelphia last month. After the cancellations of the previous couple tours, I wasn’t sure I’d ever get the chance to see you. When these dates with Willie were announced, I didn’t hesitate to fly from Texas to see this show. Willie & Family were wonderful as always; it’s been an absolute pleasure to see him a handful of times over the years. By the time you came out I had worked myself up closer to the stage, sang every song, and when Ol’ Black came out I rocked my ass off. Earth Girl was a one of the highlights—the new album is beautiful.

As a younger fan but a longtime listener ,I just wanted to share my appreciation for your undying conviction and spirit in concert. The whole band was on fire, very inspiring to me as a musician. I wish my band was able to come with me on this trip. I’ve seen a lot of shows, and it’s so easy and disappointing to see who’s phoning it in. Thank you for never doing that. After the show I went straight back to the airport and flew home the next morning. I was exhausted by the time I got back—the whole experience felt like a dream. It was worth everything to receive that feeling I got from the music with all those great people in Philly. In an age of increasingly artificial “music,” it only highlights how powerful the holy church of real live music is. I just wanted to tell you thank you for everything, I hope to see you again sometime.

Sending love to you and your loved ones
-Reid

I requested that you post the 1973 concert at the Long Beach Arena with the Stray Gators. Thanks so much for putting the concert up. Just finished listening to it, blown away that I was hearing the concert all over again. So cool. Brought back lots of memories. Great set of music. Your community of fans owes you a big thank you and debt for making this great music available to us again.

You are the best.

NEIL AND WILLIE

Hey there, Neil,

We are now a few weeks back from seeing you and Willie in Connecticut and Philly, which were both amazing nights. Thank you very much for being part of that, however it was brought together. It was really fantastic to see three incredible sets of music each night. Whoever thought to bring Ty Myers along gets extra thanks from me. I love being introduced to great new artists that way. You and Willie of course never disappoint, really, two beautiful nights with beautiful sets from both of you. Too many highlights to mention, Thank you.
Since then, I’ve been catching up on my “One by Willie” podcasts. I think the interviewer John Spong is really great, and it’s fun to hear artists you know, and artists you don’t know talking about something we all have in common, an incredible love for Willie and his songs.

Every time I listen to this podcast I say to myself it would be awesome if Neil would do this podcast. I think like most of your fans, I’m also a big Willie fan and I’d love to hear you talk more about Willie and his music in your life.

Would you give it a thought?

Thanks as always, for all you do….
-Pete Culliney

FRANCE

Hello Neil!

What do you think about the current situation in France—the student protests, the sometimes-violent police repression, and the scenes of looting and damage to shops by a few young people?

I find the world becoming increasingly harsh, and I fear for my daughters’ future.
We need love, only love ….

Peace

IMPOSSIBLE TIDE

Dear Neil,

In 1787, a Coast Miwok woman named Constantina Telpela was baptized at Mission Dolores in San Francisco. She belonged to the Guaulenes, whose homeland included the country around present-day Bolinas.

We know almost nothing about her, except that she was given a Christian name and entered a world from which there was no easy return. We don’t know what she was told, what she understood, or even what language was spoken between her and the priest.

Nevertheless, as part of my book Impossible Tide, I have attempted to imagine what she may have heard during her baptism, piecing together fragments of the surviving Coast Miwok and neighboring Ohlone languages with the Latin of the ceremony, then rendering the result back into English. Some of it reads like this:

Do you believe in God,God father almighty,Father,Creator sky, world,Sun, star, moon,Water, fire, wind?

I believe God.
Yes.

Water. Water. Water.
Body, blood,
Bone, breath, spirit.

Be born. Life.

I wonder if Marlon Brando, Pocahontas, and you might hear a song in Constantina’s baptism, and whether you’d be interested in composing and performing it as an addition to the book’s playlist.

By the fire,
Sol

Thanks Sol

SECOND SONG +

Hello Neil,

Have you ever read “The Life of Chuck” by Stephen King? It’s a great novella, made into an equally great movie. I think you’d like both.
not yet

I’ve offered before to take one of your Fender Tweed Deluxes off your hands. I know you’re holding for parts. But I just want you to know, offer still stands. 🙂

Thanks for Second Song. There’s a calming quality to it that is rare in today’s world.

All the best to you.

NEIL YOUNG RADIO

Neil Young Radio
Neil, dude, great lightbulb there idea

Hello and much love to all, today is the 20th of October and I got the email this morning about the Neil Young Radio and I thought what a great idea because I’m not going to subscribe for Sirius FM. I grew up with the FM radio in Los Angeles 94.7 KMET with great legendary DJs like Mr Jim Ladd. Paraquat Kelley, Joe Benson.

In Anaheim we had KEZY with I think his name was Joe Foreman … blah blah okay Ha!

So bottom line is being that we’re Neil Young fans. This is great news for us fans. That’s awesome because if I had those paid-for radio stations I certainly don’t listen to Howard Stern or anything else, really. You know I use Spotify because I can upload new songs when I get around to it, and the quality of the website is good enough for me. I guess if I have a question here it would be would you host some of these shows, Neil? like being a DJ host?

Growing up in the seventies those FM stations down there in LA used to play live music every Friday night on the Mighty Met 94.7 KMET … twittle-dee … haha. It’d be cool if you had a Friday night live, just nothing but live tracks. People will get used to it and they’ll know it’s Friday—Ha!
That’s how I knew back in the seventies, man, and you were a part of that. I loved it, well anyway, and I also think that the icon for the Neil Young Radio I think bumper stickers should be issued, and I’m sure a lot of other people would think so too. I say well done.

if I could host something like that I would do it like Jim Ladd: real smooth. I miss that guy. He was the greatest, and the one and only lonesome LA cowboy.

All my love to all from Kent -0-

PS don’t forget to put in those Wednesdays too—have deep cuts—songs like Captain Kennedy from Hawks and dSoves and rad obscure stuff—even some of Ralph’s stuff. I haven’t heard much from Ralph lately. I think he’s just being fuddy-duddy or something. Lol that only you have little treats here and there, that’d be cool for this fantastic idea. Looking forward to this. Thanks so much to all of you ALlOYOU!!! band members, team workers, Neil Young Archives workers, all of you!!!
Peace /💕 thank you for all your hard work and what you do for Neil and everybody thank you!!

Thanks

ROLL ANOTHER NUMBER?

Hi Neil,

I have a question about the Roll Another Number video. You state that Nils, Billy, Ben and David are with you. I see you and David in front and Nils and I think Ben in the back. I don’t see Billy. Am I blind? Is Billy in the trunk?

With love and best wishes,
Mary Jane

I’ll take a look

NEIL YOUNG RADIO

Hi Neil

I have been jamming out to your new Neil Young Radio. I put on a good pair of headphones. The sound quality is the best I have ever heard from my phone. It is incredible. I can hear notes I never heard before from your tunes.

I wanted to tell you thank you. I have been a fan of your music since Zuma. That was the first album I purchased from your catalog back in 1975 or ’76. Your music has meant more to me than any other musician or band. And now with this crystal-clear NY Radio, I can finally listen to songs as they were meant to be heard.

I can’t thank you enough for all you have done and continue to do. Good luck going forward. It’s the only way to go!

Keep the jive alive
