It has been said that a woman is expected to look like a girl, act like a lady, think like a man, and work like a dog. It’s an understatement to say that society expects a great deal from us.
Starting at birth, we are given a pink outfit and a set of expectations: We should always look our best, no matter what we are going through. We should be sweet and loving, no matter how others might want to take advantage of us for it. We should speak up for ourselves, but not if it offends someone. We can be strong; but if we are too strong, that must mean we are not in need of love and nurturing. We can be the boss, but not a bitch. We can have whatever we want, unless it’s too much.
As Tammy Wynette sang, “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman”. It’s a constant, delicate balancing act. As difficult as it is, however, I would never trade my feminine fate for that of manhood. It has its own challenges that I cannot begin to imagine.
There is no “weaker” sex – just different, strong ones.
