I first met Stephen in Fort William Ontario in 1965, Steve was playing with ‘The Company’, a folk rock group from the village in NYC. That group was an offshoot of the Au Go Go singers, a group of nine that he had previously been part of in the Village. I heard him sing a song ‘High Flyin’ Bird’ with ‘The Company’ and i never will forget how great he sounded.
From the first moment we met, we had a bond, a musical common ground and it only grew over the years. Of my all-time favorite guitarists and singers, Stills was the best. When he and The Company left Fort William for Winnipeg and i went to Toronto with the Squires, we said to each other “We will play together again”.
Through the Springfield and CSNY we kept it going. An album we did together – ‘Long May You Run’ is one of my favorites. We have continued to be great friends throughout our lives and I look forward to playing together again with Stephen. Long may you run, indeed.
