Tonight, families will gather beneath exploding fireworks, children will wave sparklers, and politicians will post the obligatory photos pretending they still agree on what this country actually stands for.
Enjoy it.
Because if Democrats retake the House, the Senate, or, if the political gods are feeling especially mischievous, both, these fireworks will be remembered as the quiet part of the show.
Trust me. I’ve seen what happens when Washington decides to stop governing and start hunting.
I spent years inside Donald Trump’s orbit. I know how he operates. I also know how Congress operates when it smells blood. Neither side is preparing for compromise. They’re preparing for total war.
The Democratic playbook isn’t exactly being hidden anymore. They’ve practically laminated it.
The second they reclaim committee gavels, expect subpoenas to fly faster than bottle rockets on the Fourth of July. Hearings. Depositions. Investigations. Financial records. Family records. Business records. Every decision, every phone call, every transaction, every conversation will become fair game.
This won’t be oversight.
It’ll be political trench warfare disguised as constitutional responsibility.
Democrats argue they have no choice.
From their perspective, this isn’t revenge. It’s accountability. They believe the second Trump administration has blurred the line between public office and private profit so dramatically that Congress has a constitutional obligation to step in.
And the list they’re assembling isn’t exactly short.
They’re preparing to examine roughly $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency gains amassed during 2025 alongside policies benefiting Trump-backed digital assets. They’ll scrutinize the reported half-billion-dollar investment from the United Arab Emirates into World Liberty Financial. They’ll dig into hundreds of millions in stock trades involving companies doing business with the federal government. They’ll question proposals for massive legal defense funds protecting MAGA allies from IRS scrutiny. They’ll examine the growing price tag attached to the White House ballroom project and the luxury aircraft accepted from Qatar.
That’s before anyone even says the word “impeachment.”
Former prosecutors are already comparing the scope of these potential investigations to scandals that once dominated entire presidencies. Except this time, they argue, the numbers aren’t measured in envelopes stuffed with cash or campaign slush funds.
They’re measured in billions.
But here’s where Washington becomes Washington.
Flip the camera around, and Republicans tell an entirely different story.
To Trump and his supporters, none of this is oversight.
It’s retaliation.
It’s simply the latest chapter in what they believe has been a decade-long effort to destroy one man by any institution willing to volunteer for the job.
The FBI.
The intelligence community.
Federal prosecutors.
State prosecutors.
The courts.
And now Congress.
From inside Trump’s political universe, Democrats aren’t interested in discovering facts.
They’re searching for headlines.
They’re looking for television moments.
They’re looking for another impeachment.
The White House has remained unwavering, insisting neither the president nor his family have engaged in conflicts of interest and maintaining every decision has been made solely to advance American interests.
And Trump?
He remains Trump.
Asked about the remarkable growth of his own wealth, he essentially shrugged.
The market is up.
Everyone’s making money.
So is he.
I’ve known Donald Trump long enough to recognize something many of his critics still miss.
Confidence has always been his first line of defense.
Not evidence.
Not legal arguments.
Confidence.
He says something with enough certainty that half the country starts questioning whether they missed something obvious.
Sometimes that confidence is backed by facts.
Sometimes it’s backed by nothing more than sheer force of personality.
But it works far more often than his opponents care to admit.
What makes this moment different is that Trump knows exactly what’s coming.
He’s said it publicly.
He’s warned Republican lawmakers that losing Congress means Democrats will immediately begin searching for grounds to impeach him.
He’s not guessing.
He’s planning.
And if history has taught us anything, Donald Trump doesn’t respond to investigations by cooperating.
He counterattacks.
Aggressively.
Relentlessly.
If Congress starts issuing subpoenas, don’t expect neatly organized binders showing up on Capitol Hill.
Expect executive privilege.
Court battles.
Constitutional challenges.
Public attacks.
Fundraising emails.
Social media warfare.
Cable news warfare.
Everything becomes a campaign.
Everything becomes a loyalty test.
Everything becomes another reason for Americans to hate each other just a little bit more.
That’s where I think both parties are making the same mistake.
They’ve become so consumed with defeating each other that neither seems particularly interested in governing the country caught in the middle.
Washington increasingly resembles two heavyweight fighters throwing haymakers while the audience wonders who’s still protecting the building from collapsing around them.
So tonight, enjoy the fireworks.
Seriously.
Watch them.
Listen to them.
Because these explosions are harmless.
They’re choreographed.
Predictable.
Tomorrow, the countdown resumes toward another kind of spectacle; one fueled not by gunpowder, but by subpoenas, accusations, cable television, political vengeance, and billions of taxpayer dollars.
Those fireworks won’t last fifteen minutes.
They could consume the next two plus years.
When Washington’s fireworks finally burn out, one party will celebrate, the other will plot its revenge, and the American people will once again be caught in the crossfire.
