OUTTAKES

Hi Neil,

Just to say top work on As Time Explodes—great sound—and Corduroy Plants. NYA really knocked it out of the park with those two. What would really finish things off nicely would be getting the outtakes you mentioned. Life is short, just put them up on NYA. Pretty please!

Love,
Dave.

We’ll check that out Dave

THANKS CHEYENNE

Dear Mr. Young,

My name is Cheyenne, and I am a developmental services worker in Ontario. I never imagined I would be writing a letter like this, but after months on strike, I felt compelled to reach out.

My coworkers and I support adults with developmental disabilities. We don’t do this work for recognition or wealth—we do it because we genuinely care about the people we support. They are part of our lives, and being away from them has been one of the hardest parts of this strike.
As the weeks have turned into months, many of us have struggled to pay rent, buy groceries, and keep up with everyday bills. Despite that, we continue because we believe this fight is about more than ourselves. It’s about ensuring that the people who dedicate their lives to caring for vulnerable members of our communities are treated with dignity and respect.

I know you’ve spent decades standing up for people and using your voice to bring attention to causes that matter. That’s why I’m reaching out. If you would be willing to acknowledge our strike, share our story, or offer a message of support, it would mean more than I can express. Even a few words from someone whose voice carries as much respect as yours could help shine a light on what hundreds of workers and the people we support are going through.
Our fight isn’t just about wages. It’s about protecting quality care, recognizing the value of care work, and making sure developmental services remain a career people can afford to stay in.
Whether or not you’re able to help, thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Thank you for a lifetime of speaking up for ordinary people and reminding us that some things are worth fighting for.

With gratitude,
Cheyenne
Ontario, Canada

ZUMA

Hello Archivist!

It is said that during the recording of Zuma, Bob Dylan walked in and played some tracks off Blood on the Tracks together with Neil and the Horse. Are there any recordings of these sessions and will they ever be released?

Greetings from the Netherlands,
Leon

There’s nothing there to share Leon.
Sorry

POLIO

As a Polio survivor from 1951 I was wondering if Neil had suffered from Post Polio Syndrome?
I’ve been dealing with this awful condition for decades now!
Just wondering??❤️

I have felt it my whole life, but it has been moderate.
Sorry

LIGHTENING IN A BOTTLE

Hi Neil,

I have been reflecting on the lyrics of your songs! You create visual pictures with a word here, and a nuance there, typically understated, so we have to fill in the rest ourselves. I think it takes more skill to create with only the most essential words and phrases, and yet evoke a real and universal response!

Your lyrics coupled with beautiful guitar riffs that captivate almost immediately can be like capturing lightning in a bottle.

Thank you!
Nancy, Rochester, NY

Thanks Nancy!

GREENDALE ACOUSTIC

Hello Neil, When Greendale acoustic was filmed did they film the whole concert or just the Greendale part? If they did will it be released someday?

Egil

It exists Egil. We will check it out

YEAR OF THE HORSE

Hey Neil! Any chance we’ll be getting Year of the Horse on vinyl? Such an underrated gem during a great tour. You could really smell the horse on a lot of them.

I’ll take a look

PERCY

Dear Neil,

Anybody call you Percy?

I was thinking about the Déjà Vu LP. A lot of songs seem to be solo efforts with you not playing any part of the LP at all. Was it harmonious or a tough gig?

I wondered why you would want to join CSNY when there seemed so many issues at any time. Or was that just Rolling Stone magazine always saying big problems in that group?

I loved those guys

What was the issue with the Stills-Young Band tour that eat a peach was uttered?

The second Song release date has been not too much said any reason?

I can understand touring with a band is a big drama but solo shows must be easier option or touring is just too hard for you these days.

I hope not—a trip down under awaits you.

As time goes by is a Neil Young Centre for words a thought to show all your stuff to the world? Shame to lose it.

Hope family reunited it’s tough with that sometimes I know.

I bought at D-45 the other day. By far the best guitar I have. It feels so good and so well built. What models of Martin guitars do you have? I have D-18 & D-28 but D-45 is the bee’s knees.

I look forward to the release of new LP and wish you as usual all the best.

I can really relate when people say your music affects them in a positive way if you have achieved anything, that’s enough.

It’s uplifting when you’re down sure works for me especially Separate Ways tune.

All the best
Steve Down-Under

FEEL THE NIGHT

“Let’s go out and ‘feel’ the night!

Even though you wrote this in 1992, I just heard it for the first time on July 14, 2026 at the Cambria Pines Lodge in California by a local entertainer.

Just a little over two weeks later I played it for my friend’s mother, Cindy. I had it on my heart to play it two days earlier, but the timing wasn’t right. She had entered the Nathan Adelson Inpatient Hospice seven days before.

She had not spoken since her arrival.

Pain medicine was constant, but no amount of morphine seemed to help, finally she was given Dilaudid. She had been hospitalized with multiple surgeries and constant pain for the previous three months.

When I walked in about 5 p.m, I immediately noticed Cindy was much calmer than previously. She was lying on her side with her hand resting on a pillow. Her breathing was shallow. Her eyes were slightly open for the first time. The color in her skin had deepened. The arm with the port was still swollen. Each evening before, her eyes were shut and her breathing was labored.

Another daughter, Becky, was with her and had been there most of the day. My friend, Lisa, was on her way and would arrive no later than 5:30. I told Becky and her husband, Dave, they could leave and I would wait for Lisa. They did.

Lisa arrived shortly thereafter. Her mother had called her “Bird” from the time she was a small child. I mentioned I had brought my speaker and would like to play a song for her mother. Timing was not good at the moment; Lisa wanted to unwind from her busy day working with the disabled.

A few minutes later we talked about our good friend Joan who had passed suddenly and unexpectedly in March. The conversation went this way:

“A large brown bird, maybe a falcon, flew across my car and looked me in the eye on my way here.”

“Could it have been a hawk?” I found the picture I had taken of the hawk sitting on the fence outside my bedroom window a few days after Joan passed and showed it to her.

“Was it brown? Was it sandy brown? It looked me straight in the eye, I know it did.”

We thought it was the same bird; we agreed Joan was reaching out to us.

Conversation slowed and Lisa commented, “You can play the song now.”

I placed my speaker on the bed beside Cindy’s head. Softly, Harvest Moon played. As always before, it caught my breath. I stood silently and listened.

I noticed a tear in her her mother’s eye. Within a few minutes she took her last breath.

I wanted to share this with you and appreciate the deep spiritual opening that song created in me. So much so, that I wanted to share it with my friend’s mother in her last days. I had no idea her last breath would come then as well.

Personally, I still can’t get enough of it. I stop and catch my breath each time I hear it, not because of Cindy, although the memory remains, but because I felt it as deeply before the incident as I feel now. It’s background in my brain so I listen again. I love the harmonica part.

Thank you!

Thanks and PEACE to you

SOUL OF THE TOUR

Hey Neil,

I hope you’re doing well. After watching and listening to Corduroy Plants and As Time Explodes several times, I really love that both capture the, as I would describe it, soul of the tour.

There were songs I newly discovered or rediscovered because these songs were played at this tour, a lot of them in very unique versions.

One of these songs is Looking Forward. Since the tour it is one of my favourites. That’s why I want to know why Daryl and you left it out of Corduroy Plants? Is there no video footage or not available in a decent quality?

As always and this time in particular, I’m LOOKING FORWARD 😉 to hearing from you.

Lots of love to your family and you, Alex

Those and about ten others were left out. We will share the out takes…..

THRASHER

Hi Neil,

Tonight Hearse Theatre on NYA again featured Thrasher. This is one of my absolute top favorite songs since it has been released. Hard for me to explain why—it seems to much more than just perfectly combine lyrics, music and that somewhat melancholic way it is presented. Hope you understand, just had to put down these lines.

Thanks for this great music that filled my life!

Regards from Germany,
Gerhard

DECADES

Going through decades of your own life in sound must be, in some ways, a long trip down memory lane. When you’re going through Archives Vol. 4, is there someone in particular who’s no longer with us that you find yourself thinking about especially?

Forever grateful for the music you’re creating.

VINYL

Hi Neil,

I just bought and listened to the first CSN LP reissue by Rhino High Fidelity. It sounds amazing! All analog and a beautiful pressing. They are really a great line of releases. Just listen to the ZZ Top Deguello reissue if you want to be blown away! Even my Japanese pressings are a close second. My question is, if Rhino came calling looking to release any of your albums, or CSNY, or Buffalo Springfield, in these audiophile reissue pressings, would you consider it? I’d sure love to see it happen!

Thanks,
Matt

PROCESS

Dear Neil,

I would love to hear Hanlon’s / Mulligan’s process for recording your shows. How do they, if they do at all, attempt to mitigate bleed? Are they recording into digital? Which DAW, if so? I’d be interested in as much detail as possible, from mics to whatever outboard gear or in the box plugins they use, etc.

I’d also love to hear from Mulligan what board he uses and gear he likes to use.

Lastly, I’d love to know the signal chain on the Greendale Megaphone that swivels side to side. How does that work, from the swiveling to the audio processing?

Thanks so much for any info on this stuff!

Sincerely,
Hunter H

I’ll ask them if they can write something….
Thanks

NOTE FROM RUFUS

Hi Neil, hope you are well. I was feeling like I needed to hear Human Highway from my Comes a Time vinyl. As I slid it out of the sleeve a little note fell out. It was handwritten on a notepad from a Howard Johnson hotel in Nashville from probably the early ’90s.

“Bon chance Jeff. Rufus Thibodeaux”

He was nice enough to stop for a photo after an Opry performance that night. I thought you might appreciate this little story.

Peace & Love

OUTTAKES

Hi Neil. I’ve had several drafted messages, but never felt like they were ‘good enough’ to send to you. I hate that feeling. I looked back at them and sorta wished I’d just sent them along; hoping you would have gotten a small amount of amusement from my thoughts. Maybe one day I will just for fun. 🙂

Tonight, I am just super excited to say we are coming to Farm Aid for our first-ever event. I feel lucky to be early in my journey with your music. I have regrets for not getting it sooner. I keep encouraging my husband to send you a message. He’s been a fan nearly his entire life. We just feel happy to enjoy your music together. It’s been an amazing experience. You are a part of our life. Again, I say ‘thank you.’ If I shared any old messages with you, you’d see Cortez is still taking my breath. It hurts me, and yet I love it. Never stop writing what you feel, what you want to say, what you deem important. Everything you produce is authentic, and what a gift that is to us. Love to you & Daryl. Make every moment count. Every day is a gift. Love is the answer.

Peace,
Love,
Appreciation,

Tena (and her forever soul mate, Bill)

Thanks for being a good part of our life – Bill

Thanks you two

VANCOUVER DISCOVERY

Hey Neil

Reading about John Hanlon’s new Vancouver 1991 discovery got me thinking—what about releasing the original Briggs Weld VHS mix on the Archives site? Not sure if you guys still have it, but it really kicks ass and it’s different enough to the released version to be a fun artifact. Folks might get a kick out of comparing and contrasting them? Just a thought.

Go well.
Dom
