A ROLLING STONE

A Rolling Stone

Dear Neil

I hope my letters don’t seem tiresome. You are providing an amazing conduit for true fans to connect with you. I suspect that it is your humble traits as a Canadian.

When I first heard the song Rolling Stone I had the same reaction as you. When I read Yukon poet Robert Service’s poem “”A Rolling Stone,”” it inspired me to write a book, Chasing Muse: Canada, in which Bob, you, and I had brief encounters in my adventures.

You may remember Robert Service’s poem from school, “The Cremation of Sam McGee.”
When you read it, you will be assured that you married a Rolling Stone, Daryl.

A Rolling Stone is something to be.

NEW ALBUM

Hi Neil, I hope all is well. It’s great to hear you’re working on a new project. First of all, I’d like to thank you for fulfilling an old request I made a few years ago in anticipation of the 50th anniversary release of Harvest. Namely, the famous demos/outtakes from Thunder in Toronto. It would have been nice to have them in the box, but that’s fine. They’re wonderful recordings with your spectacular voice. It’s truly exciting to hear early versions of songs that later become historic in this way.

I’m taking this opportunity because, in the end, those of us who love you so much would always like to have everything and hear everything. From your documents contained in the first book of Archives Vol. 1, it appears that you recorded the song “The Bridge” at Island Studios in London on February 25, 1971, which is an incredible song. It would be great to hear the one marked as mixed, too, JH Ruff.

Also, in April 1971, I see you recorded an early version of “Alabama” at Quadrafonic Studios. Jack Nitzsche probably wasn’t on piano during those sessions. Perhaps the equally great John Harris. Is it possible to listen to these early versions of “The Bridge” and “Alabama” here in the Archives? That way, we could truly get a complete picture of the Harvest sessions.

Thank you in advance, and yes, I’m a little sad you’re not coming to Europe and Italy, but I’m happy to know that new horizons, new songs, and outtakes can still delight our lives and, as my friend Paolo says, extend them.

Hugs to you, Daryl, and your loved ones.
Stefano from Rome,.

Thanks Stefano
Many of these are in the list to review.
I AM super happy with our new album. It is very special to me.

OUTTAKES DRAWER

Outtakes

Hi Neil, I enjoy the new Outtakes drawer so much! Thanks to you and your team to continue improving the Archives experience. And so cool that one can jump from an outtake directly into the album, and back.

Now though I really like the vintage and analog look of the interface of NYA I feel that there is place for a bit of color too. Of course vintage color. The tabs for the Outtakes form a long series, would it be nice to give them a unique color? For instance, a specific color for each decade? It would make the tabs easier to recognize where they come from. I know they are all in chronological order, but color might make them a bit easier to locate.

Greetings from Germany, and stay well,
Jan

Thanks Jan
Thanks for the idea, but that doesn’t work with our current system.

TICKETMASTER

Hello Mr. Young,

I hope you are keeping well. I’ve been a fan ever since I can remember. My dad kept your Harvest Moon album in the car and I used to sing along with him to every song. It was especially helpful when my parents headed for the big divorce, California style. You were extremely influential to me in my high school years, which taught me how to keep on rocking in the free world. Thank you so much for all the great music, the memories, and the guidance.

I have a favour to ask of you. I recently had some trouble with Ticketmaster trying to get tickets to a new group that I enjoy. The typical story of being on the computer right at 10am to make sure I can get a chance of getting tickets … for only 10:01am to roll around and somehow the show has already been sold out. Several hours later, Ticketmaster is posting resale tickets on its website for six times the original price.

I’ve had it with them. I am tired of fans suffering and artists getting the blame. I want change. We have the technology now to prevent scalping.

I know you have had issues in the past with Ticketmaster, so I thought of contacting you right away. I have started a petition to try and stop this practice of gouging fans. I would be honoured if you would take the time to sign my petition. And if you feel it necessary to share the petition with your networks and fan base I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Long may you run,

-Clayton Giles

I am with you

OUTTAKES

Hi NYA Archivists,

I love the new separated cabinets but I have noticed that several ‘Outtakes’ are missing from the ‘Outtakes’ cabinet, such as the five from Thunder Sound, Toronto Jan 19, 1971 to name a few.

THE SPOOK IN THE SWIM

Hi Neil,

I’ve always loved your work with Crazy Horse—all that raw emotion that transports everyone to another dimension. I think Briggs called it “the spook in the swim.” Whatever you call it, it rocks.

There’s something really special about the Dead Man soundtrack and Le Noise, too. More spook and rock.

Ever since the first time I heard the White Stripes, I’ve had the wish that you and Ralph Molina would dive back into the spook and come out with something stripped down, loud, and mind-blowing. That would be incredible. A girl can dream!

Thanks
Maybe in the future

HAMMERSMITH ODEON
ACROSS THE WATER

Hey Neil,

It just occurred to me that March 28–April 2 sees the 50th anniversary of the legendary shows at the Hammersmith Odeon and at the Apollo in Glasgow in 1976 (including the Old Laughing Lady busking footage!) which are the basis of the movie Across The Water and of course the V2/V3 album releases.

That tour was a milestone for you as a live ‘solo’ rock artist, certainly as far as international audiences are concerned. And it certainly was a major milestone for me—first time I got to see you live.

It doesn’t look like you have it planned already but it would certainly be cool to see the movie Across The Water aired in Hearse Theatre for the occasion, or maybe linked with a special message on the Front Page? I don’t believe it has been shown yet on NYA (has it?) though my short-term memory these days is not what it once was!

A bit short notice I know but you would have a week or so to get it out there.

Robert (Broadfoot)

Great idea!  It will be up on the Hearse Theater all week!
Thanks

CONCERT FILMS

Are any more concert films gonna be released anytime soon?
I would love to see concert film of the Harvest Moon tour.

I am not sure there is one.
THE EARLIER THE PERIOD THE MORE RARE concert footage is!
