CVC AT GLASTONBURY

I’ve been a fan for years, I took my son to his first gig—NY at London Hammersmith Odeon. He can play nearly every NY song on my extensive record collection, electric or acoustic. This year my son’s band CVC are playing Glastonbury on the same day as Neil and I cant get a ticket 🙁

Keep your eye out for them, they are good!

Hope we see them!

BOTTLE

Hello Neil, I just got back on a long road trip from Seattle to the a ranch north of Boise with my son to pick up a puppy, rolling through the Pacific Northwest landscapes listening to your stories and tales, put to music from you and all your bandmates (random). I felt a Muse on the trip, and was compelled to check in, to write you a letter. Makes me wish I had Jack White’s mini antique recording studio to put this letter to song. Anyway, the last few years I’ve been on a Crazy Horse bender, ever since sneaking away to see you and the crew for those few Winnipeg shows in 2017. Man that was f’n COLD. On my CH benders, which have been frequent as I approach 50 yrs old, my CH blackouts have been pretty common. I just seem to have been living with Crazy Horse in the bottle, going back and forth from the Beach (favorite), to Re-ac-tor (2nd) and of course Weld era Santa Cruz, WAY down in the rust bucket. I sort of remember San Diego shows with my friends arm in arm in like 5th row center, singing along to FUCKIN UP, night 2. Like a mantra. I just feel like want to be that Opera Star, badly. But I’m Fuckin Up more than ever, so put down the bottle on June 1. I feel better and relationships and have already improved, so it’s all gravy … however I feel like I have this attachment to Neil and the Horse that has to go till 4am with every drink I can get my hands on, in order to make you proud. Tell me I’m crazy. My question is, How do I access that deep rusty feeling, without booze?? I’m on the right track kicking off this summer, but something about it makes me feel like I’m letting you down, or this is all me being down somehow. It’s only castles burning I suppose. Going to try and access the CH energy in other ways without the bottle. I guess we will see, when I get to see you in Chicago and Gorge (now the winery?? the spiritual energy of the gorge can’t be matched, but I get it. Dancing with the devil of LiveNation venues take some spirit out of the whole thing). Thanks for touring, I know it has to be exhausting, but all of us out here have SO MUCH LOVE TO BURN RIGHT NOW, you got a special internal lighter that sparks when you play music for us.

Anyway, thanks Neil for the offer to write you a letter here on NYA. It’s a nice touch to a great fan experience on NYA. Love you man. PS I have an apology too, karma bugging me about it. I snuck into your show in Denver in 2007 via the smoking exit. Decent show, but didn’t have to go again Night 2, so I sold my front row tickets for a profit. So I made some money via you and your bands’ art. If there is a way I can pay you back, let me know, Otherwise I have an extra Oasis Chicago ticket on Solider Field August 28, after seeing you at Riverfront Plaza Aug 27, if you and the boys are still in town for a few days, join me/us for the show? ticket on me, paid via rock n roll karma.

You can do it without the bottle of booze. Try the bottle of love.

be well

CVC AT GLASTONBURY

Hey Neil,

Can’t wait to catch you and the Chrome Hearts this summer. Loved seeing you and Crazy Horse last spring. My wife and I went through a sad period of loss the last few weeks. Lots of tears. I turn to your music in good times and bad, and it sees me through. She heard me listening to the Grey Riders album from the Archives while we were working in the garden, our hands in the dirt. She told me hearing Southern Pacific made her heart feel happy and she wanted me to play it over and over. I’ll be forever grateful for that brightness that helped us both in a very gloomy time.

Be well,
Bill

Thanks Bill
Glad we were there for you both

RESIDENCY?

I imagine touring can be hard, especially at our age. Have you ever considered doing a residency and having the fans come to you rather than the other way around? I, for one, would be more than happy to make the trip.

Just an idea.
David

Thanks David
I love seeing the people out there, and playing for them and us

CLEAN BEAUTIFUL SWEDEN

Hi Daryl and Neil and Everyone,

Missed you by, that much, in Sweden.

I was there in Stockholm, two weeks before you were at Rattvik, I would have gone, but…. It is a beautiful country, the people are very nice, a real culture shock from the USA, we’ve got to do better!

Hoping the tour goes well. Stay healthy. Play loud.
May peace prevail on Earth!
Love and only love.
-Mudflow Mike

Thanks Mike

OUT OF THE BLUE

First Recording of My My, Hey Hey (Out of Blue)

Hi Neil/The Archivist

My My, Hey Hey (Out of Blue) is credited to You and Jeff Blackburn (1977?). To my knowledge, the first recorded version was the live recording at The Boarding House (May 1978). Do you remember if an earlier studio recording, maybe in the demo form, exists? Thanks.

Oceanside/Countryside (which is a beautiful record) and your new album Talkin’ To The Trees are a heavy rotation at my home. See you in Europe for some dates.

Andrea from Turin, Italy.

Thanks Andrea

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT 5OTH

Hello there,

I’m not sure if you’re the right person to contact, but I wanted to share my plea.

As we approach the 50th anniversaries of Tonight’s the Night (recorded in 1973) and Zuma, I write your team to consider remastered reissues of these two essential albums—releases that would honor their historical and emotional significance and finally present them with the sonic fidelity they deserve.

Released within months of each other in 1975, these works are more than milestones; they are raw, fearless statements that mark turning points in Neil Young’s artistic journey. Yet unlike many other titles in his catalog, Tonight’s the Night and Zuma have not been reissued as standalone CDs with the archival care and audio restoration worthy of their impact.

These albums deserve to be heard as they were meant to be—alive with grief, spontaneity, hope, and electricity.

As a long-time listener and supporter of Neil’s vision, I sincerely hope these two cornerstone albums will receive the dedicated attention that so many of his other works have been given.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to preserving one of the greatest catalogs in rock and folk music. The time for these two records has come.

With appreciation and deep respect.

Thanks
I think you will love Tonight’s the Night 50th, remastered from analog originals with 6 extra tracks from the sessions!

COASTAL DATES

Hi, Archives people!

I saw that the folders for all of the songs on “Coastal” are now available in the Filing Cabinet. I was glad to see them, but I was also disappointed that the recording date was entered as simply “2023” for all the tracks. No specific date or venue where the song was recorded was included.
Could someone please open those pages and enter that information? I really like to be able to see exactly when and where each song was recorded. Thanks!
(You all have an awesome job, by the way!)

BERGEN

Great show in Bergen! Loved every minute. Was close to the stage, groovin’ in the mist, feeling the fjord and tree vibes. Lovin’ nature and the music. Met some cool folks. Had a drink with them afterwards. We all loved it. Keep on rocking and loving.

REQUESTS

Dear Neil,

I’m from Poland, for the third time I’m going to Berlin to see you. This time I’m travelling with my mum, who just turned 60, because she wanted to finally see you too! I’m delighted with new additions to the setlist, it’s always great to see you play those deep cuts. How about songs which are (sadly) so accurate nowadays? Shots, Vampire Blues, Revolution Blues. Go full rebel Neil, we heard Old Man and Heart of Gold a million of times! We need your inspiring heart and soul more than ever!

See you in Waldbuhne,
Michal

Michal
See you there!
Played heart of Gold once on the tour
Old man has rarely been played for years, except for this tour and I enjoy it. I have been exercising my voice a lot and before i could not hit the notes in OLD MAN!.

NATURAL

Natural beauty, indeed (of Norway, which is wonderful). From that studio album, been getting into Unknown Legend. Two chords! And that count. Genius, and fun to play. Then by chance (ha!) picked a Timeline show from Kelowna, BC (beauty there, too) with a fine rendition featuring the great Anthony Crawford. Love The Archives! Thanks for ‘em.

GOLD AND BLACK

I guess you may end up reading this on a bus, on the way across Europe, as you head from Denmark to Ireland.

I wanted to say thanks to you and to the Chrome Hearts for two very fine shows to start the European tour.

And thank you for including my photos and the review that I wrote for MOJO magazine on the front page of Times-Contrarian. That was so cool to see, having being a fan of over 40 years (& proud NYA Patron from the start of Archives).

Dalhalla was a blast, so much energy on the stage and the workouts on the Gold Top and Old Black was … wow! And that amazing Cortez in the cold, wet night in Bergen, one of the finest I’ve heard.

So, thank you Chrome Hearts. I wish you all safe travels across Europe and I look forward to seeing the final show of the tour in Paris—I’d really enjoy hearing First Fires of Winter and Let’s Roll Again there, that’d be nice….

Best,

VIOLENT SIDE?

Hi Neil,

Warming up for next week’s concert in Groningen.

Meanwhile the world is on fire and some folks don’t seem to control their anger by throwing missiles at each other. Why not play ‘violent side’ in Groningen. Its such a great and powerful song.

Anyway, look forward to see you in my student town (in the days that used to be) and its the first time both my sons, who study there now, will join to see you. 😃

Thanks!!!
see u there with your sons

CARNEGIE HALL TIMELINE

Dear Neil,

Thank you so much for putting up on NYA the January 10, 2014 show of your Carnegie Hall stand. I know I asked about releasing this show before and after you took formal requests. I took my older two kids to that show and what a show to attend! The two shows I saw during that stand still rank amongst the greatest shows I have ever been to by anybody. I took my older two again to see you last summer with the Horse and I am taking my youngest to see you this summer at Jones Beach. I listened to the show with the entire family on a long drive this weekend and loved it. Thank you—means a lot to me to hear this show again! Looking forward to seeing you in August.

COPENHAGEN

Dear Neil

Thank you, and the Chrome Hearts, for a wonderful concert in Copenhagen last night.
As our middle daughter is getting married in Italy shortly I will miss your upcoming concerts in England. Through the wonder of NYA I was able to secure a ticket for last night. It was worth every minute of the journey from London to Denmark to be there last night.

You are an inspiration to the conservation movement and fellow septuagenarians everywhere.
Keep up the great work.

All the best

COPENHAGEN BAD SOUND

Hi Neil and band

Saw you in Copenhagen last night. I could see that you and the band were doing just great to entertain us, like the many times I have seen you playing since 1993 at Roskilde Festival. But the concert was ruined by the most awful sound and listening experience. What a shame.

Best wishes for the upcoming concerts in Europe.

Love
Christian

Yes I heard about the sound. The people in back could not hear well..the wind was so intense. Very bad. SO SORRY

The music felt great where we were!!.

EUROPEAN LEG

Hey Neil!!!

Hope you are enjoying the European leg of your tour!! Just got tickets to the Charlotte date in NC, in which will be the first date back in the States. Hopefully you will enjoy it because I am VERY excited … have not seen you perform since the Alchemy tour in Fairfax, VA and the LeNoise tour before that which was just incredible. Just found a DVD of Rust Never Sleeps that I bought and had packed away … now I’m really excited … you were laughing on that cover with the goonies. What a lot of hidden gems in that even with Devo hahaha. Well thanks again for all you do and look forward to the Charlotte show.

PEACE,

TIMELINE

Timeline Curator

Neil,

Can you give any feedback on how the Timeline concerts are chosen and what you or the team look for? So many to choose from and worthy of being included.

I would ask that some of the previous circulated boots from the 92–2001 be looked at, as I’m sure you have some soundboards that we would all be thrilled to hear.

Hope you and the guys are finding your grove on the road.
Love what Micah brings.

COPENHAGEN KID ON DAD’S SHOULDERS

Dear Neil,

you made a lifetime memory for us and our eight-year-old son Benjamin when you played “Rockin in the Free World” in Copenhagen! He was on my shoulders and you pointed twice in his direction only to then dig deeper into the strings. It was an amazing experience for us as a family and we will never forget that.

Beni is a big fan since he was little. Due to age restrictions in Sweden (14 yrs) and Norway (18 yrs), we had to travel from Northern Norway to Denmark to see you and the band live.
It was also very emotional when you played his favourite song “Old Man.”

Thank you. You are an inspiration. Keep rockin!
Benjamin, Mariann and Ron

I REMEMBER YOU BOTH!!!

ROAD DISPATCHES

Neil, Thanks for the dispatches from the road. I am enjoying reading about the travels and tour. Your last one from Norway was a nice distraction from the unreal world. All the best for a great tour. I saw you last May in Bridgeport, CT but won’t make it to this leg of the tour, so I’ll be following along here on NYA. Love Earth & Throw Your Hatred Down.

FIRST FIRE OF WINTER

Dear Neil,

Still smiling with the past Sweden show in mind. Thank you. I’ve been there first row. Didn’t listen to the new album before on purpose cause I wanted to hear some of the new songs live first time. Well that didn’t happen, which is okay. But after I did listen to the new album: Please consider to include some of the amazing new acoustic tunes into your setlist. ‘First Fire of Winter,’ ‘Thankful’ or the title track itself would just fit perfect into the set. You might not care about that wish, but you can still consider? Looking forward to see you in Berlin.

I am Thankful for all the music and greetings from Sweden,
Ulf

Thanks Ulf
We will add the songs soon.

GLASTONBURY BROADCAST

Dear Neil Young:

With the greatest respect I write in deep sadness over the news that you will not be allowing the BBC to broadcast your set at the Glastonbury Festival this year. I pay what to me is a lot of money for access to NYA, the BBC is not a corporate entity, it’s under sustained attack by the right wing as a not-for-profit organisation, it’s not perfect but it is a source of wonderful content and a magnificent proving ground for young people learning broadcast media skills.

Your show from Glastonbury being on the BBC would be the only way I would be able to get to see your current show outside of dodgy bootlegs. Please reconsider. I am disappointed that the only English gig you are playing apart from Glastonbury is at The Hyde Park venue, a venue where you will be subject to stringent volume restrictions and a 22:30 curfew. I have been to see the Rolling Stones there. As an audience member unless you pay the top gold circle prices it’s a total waste of time, no sight of the stage even for a tall person and the definition of a corporate event designed to fleece you of more money for food and drink and herd you around like cattle, the antithesis of what I felt that you as an artist and a man are all about. I don’t think it’s a venue where you would ever choose to go. Please let the BBC broadcast your Glastonbury show, you could easily stipulate that it only gets shown on the night thereby spreading the love just the once.

With the greatest respect,
Robert Hale

We are doing that just tonight!!
Enjoy!!

GLASTONBURY BROADCAST

I hear the Glastonbury set will not be shown on BBC at all.

Really disappointing for many long term fans. The days of sitting in a field for three days, possibly in poor weather, paying £400 for a ticket, watching bands we haven’t heard of are long gone for many. I presume Neil knows the demographic of his audience, and to be honest, I think it shows scant disregard for them. I actually would like to know Neil’s actual reason/s for this rather than reading crap on Facebook such as hatred of the BBC, which is prevalent in the UK. I first saw him at Wembley in 1974 with CSN and have seen him a few times since. I am nearly 69 and reasonably fit but many are older and unfit so are disappointed.

We are doing the broadcast once tonight!!

GLASTONBURY BROADCAST

Hey Neil,

We can’t we watch your Glastonbury set on TV.
There are an awful lot of your fans that are too old now to stand in a field all day to see you perform live.

I have been looking forward to your set at Glastonbury for months, only to find that it will not be televised.

I am sure I am not just speaking for myself here

We are doing the live broadcast tonight!

GLASTONBURY BROADCAST

Re Glastonbury / BBC

Neil,

(Please) Let the BBC broadcast your set.
Don’t leave your fans “Dreaming about the way things sound now” searching for scraps on YouTube.
Remember when you had twin BBC cups on your grand piano! Back then your fans would have been at Glastonbury. Not today. Today, due to the lottery ticket sales prior to lineups being announced, it’s a tiny % of the Glastonbury audience that will be made up of your loyal fans.
Glastonbury is very far from the hippy dream roots where it all began. It’s a crass corporate whore of a beast enjoyed mostly by influencers trying to convince you that you’re missing out on the best event ever; while spending most of their time vlogging, not watching bands.
Regards

Bryan

GLASTONBURY BROADCAST

hi Neil,

longtime fan, first time letter-writer!

I was wondering about your reasoning for not allowing the BBC to show your Glastonbury set? although I’m seeing you at Hyde Park, I was very much looking forward to having a professionally recorded show from the current tour to listen to in the meantime—the timeline concerts are my favourite NYA feature, and I thought it would be a great compliment to the 2009 set you released on here recently.

Regardless, the shows are sounding amazing from fan-shot clips on YouTube and I can’t wait for Hyde Park.

PEACE AND LOVE,
Jack

SANTA CRUZ RECORDINGS

Mike Pellegrini states that Bruce Gladwin opened the FLUX 16-track recording studio in 1976 next door to the Steamship in Santa Cruz and mentions that “Neil Young was a frequent visitor at the studio (Neil spent the entire summer of 1977 in Santa Cruz).” Did you record there too (or only at Magic Devices owned by Alan Goldwater)?

FIRST FIRE OF WINTER

Welcome to Eire …The Emerald Isle

Hi Neil,

I hope you had a calm crossing from Holyhead and have now reached Irish soil safe and sound. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity to see you live for over thirty years, and now the moment has finally arrived! Roll on Malahide Castle tomorrow.

I’ve been loving the new album, especially ’First Fire of Winter.’ Your endless creativity and passion never ceases to amaze me!

I’m so looking forward to your performance tomorrow and the wonderful Chrome Hearts. It would be a dream for me to hear Harvest Moon live! Fingers crossed!

Rest well and see you tomorrow evening,
Michelle D.

We had a blast there!!

BACH

Hello Neil Young Archives, hello Neil Young,

I took the liberty of using your song ‘Like a Hurricane’ to compose a three-part fugue in the style of Johann Sebastian Bach. We recorded it on video on a church organ in Leipzig.

Thank you very much and best regards from Leipzig-Markkleeberg, Germany!

FONTAINEBLEU

Hi Neil,

I hope you are having a good time on the road through Europe. I am gearing up to my part of the road trip seeing you in Brussels up to Stuttgart, five shows in eight days with lotsa travel. A bit apprehensive, as this will be my first tour again since I just about survived a pulmonary embolism and coma end of 2023, but really looking forward to finally reaching my 100th show of yours in Stuttgart.

Please remember my request for the incredibly beautiful song Fontainebleau from the Stills-Young album, which has an incredible guitar sound and wonderful solo. And you NEVER played it live before! So what better day than at my 100th show in Stuttgart!!!

No matter what, I am happy to still be here and be able to see you live again.
If we all keep breathing, let’s go on to many more shows.
Wishing you good health and a great tour!
See you soon!

COPENHAGEN

Dear Neil

Thank you so much for a fantastic concert in Copenhagen last Sunday. We were completely blown away, especially by Like a Hurricane, Love and only Love and Down By The River. It was great to hear Be The Rain and Sun Green again. The last time was at your solo concert in Falknersalen in Copenhagen in 2003, but unfortunately these songs are still very relevant…
See you down the road!

All the best summer greetings to you all, from Inge and Henrik in Denmark

Thanks for being there!
