For Manitoba, The Times They’re Not A-Changin’

Residents of Manitoba, Canada, will no longer switch their clocks back and forth, as the provincial government announced it is permanently ending seasonal clock changes.

The decision follows a public survey that drew nearly 72,000 responses. 92 percent of surveyed residents supported ending the biannual adjustment, with 58 percent choosing to stay on daylight saving time, which is one hour behind Eastern time.

In an official statement, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said: “We heard from Manitobans loud and clear — no more changing the clocks in Manitoba.”

“Permanent daylight-saving time is good for our health, good for business, and good for parents. For families, especially those with young kids, that one-hour shift can disrupt sleep and routines for days. This change means one less adjustment families must deal with each spring and fall.”

Starting November 1, Manitoba will refrain from turning its clocks back, joining a growing movement across Western Canada. British Columbia, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories, while Yukon moved to permanent time in 2020 and Saskatchewan had permanent standard time since 1966. Globally, around a third of nations still alter their clocks twice a year.
