Chronic ocean heating fuels
‘staggering’ loss of marine life, study finds

A new study in Nature Ecology & Evolution finds that a tenth of a degree of ocean warming per decade is enough to drive fish populations down 7.2 percent, with biomass losses hitting nearly 20 percent in some years. Marine heatwaves can briefly boost numbers in cold-water areas, which hides how bad the long-term trend really is.
