PSYCHEDELIC PILL – Neil Young & Crazy Horse
released 10-30-2012
We recorded ‘Psychedelic Pill’ in 2012.
It was the Horse’s second released record since ‘Toast,’ which had been made in 2000.
Greendale was made in 2003 and released, while Toast’ was finally released in 2022.
The horse had not played in years in 2011, and we first recorded ‘Americana’ that year and then, almost immediately afterward, ‘Psychedelic Pill’ in 2012. Both albums were made on the ranch in the White House, which we set up with the ‘green board’, the ‘brass board’, a baby Neve board (all great sounding) and a bunch of gear, visible in the ‘Horseback’ video.
Psychedelic Pill has many big long jam songs, showing the Horse in a great light. I loved jamming with Billy, Ralphie, and Poncho. Long live the Horse!
‘Horseback’, a 30 minute epic shot by Ben Johnson, Larry’s son, has a great instrumental version of ‘Cortez the Killer’ in it. Although there is no vocal, here are the lyrics.
Psychedelic Pill and Toast are two Crazy Horse albums of my songs, while Americana was made up of old songs from America’s great musical heritage. Greendale was a story album of my songs.
