One of my favorites of all the albums I have made, ‘Comes a Time’ stands by itself, a unique record, produced in Nashville with many of my life-long friends.
On many of these songs, recorded in Nashville, the late great Nicolette Larson sings with me. Recorded mostly with Ben Keith and Tim Mulligan producing, although Briggs produced two tracks as well . . .’Look Out for My Love’ and ‘Lotta Love,’ Comes a Time is in a class by itself (in my mind).
Starting with me recording solo at Triad Studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, while I was living on and restoring a Baltic Trader, the WN Ragland, the album was completed in Nashville.
The Ragland, I still have today, 40 years later.
These songs are very meaningful to me, being written daily on the boat and taken to the Triad studio in Florida to record and overdub my own instruments on. Oceanside Countryside, that album I made in Florida, was then played for Reprise. My friends there suggested I try adding more instruments and make it sound more like a record than a demo. I did that and ‘Comes a Time’ is the result. In Nashville we added ‘Motorcycle Mama,’ my favorite all time song ‘Four String Winds’ (Ian Tyson,) and ‘Already One’.
’Oceanside Countryside’ is still unreleased as of this writing. It is pure and simple, a record of my songs that I still think stands up well today.
Tom Wilkes did the cover, which is a pic taken during rehearsals for a benefit I did in Florida with the ‘Give to the Wind Orchestra.’ The original title for ‘Comes a Time’ was ‘Give to the Wind’. One of the best tracks (imho) is ‘Already One’. That song still resonates strongly with me today. I wrote it about Carrie, Zeke’s mom. She was a very special person and I still see her and love her in Zeke today.
From my perspective,’Comes a Time’ is one of the most heartfelt and soul searching records I have ever made.
