This album was made at Third Man Records in Nashville with Jack White. I saw and heard Jack’s “record your own voice” booth, where you could go inside and record a 45rpm record live and take it with you. The sound was a blast from the circus past. Imagine recording your own song inside a box on a noisy midway at the fair! That’s what I saw when Jack showed the recording booth to me.
I instantly thought that if I wanted to reach my dear passed mother, the best way I could do it would be through this recording machine, so I recorded many of my all-time favorite songs in the booth and sent them to her.
Technically, we used the vinyl as the master source. The sound is so old it that suits the songs, as most of them are old too. Everything comes from one place.
I Iove these songs and their writers. They all mean a lot to me. At a time when I was championing higher quality sound for the consumers, many were perplexed at the tone of this record. I loved it and still do.
Recording at ‘Third Man Records’ with Jack White was a wonderful experience for me. . . . . but mostly it’s these great songs and the ancient sounding records I was able to deliver from the past. . . . . that make ‘A Letter Home’ occupy a sweet spot in my heart.
