FRINGE
Hello Neil. Listening to sleeps with angels on this Friday afternoon. Another masterpiece in the Neil Young catalog. I tried sending you a picture of a painting my mom did in 1970. Man and woman figure walking away hand in hand, bell bottoms, hippie leather hats and fringed leather jackets, though maybe you and Daryl would enjoy. I saw you in West Valley City Utah with Promise of the Real sporting a leather fringe. Anyway. hope your upcoming tour is filled with great musical wonder.
Peace and love,

COASTAL
Just saw the Coastal film last night—it was great as expected.
I did want to come on here though and say as a fan—we want those rare songs, we love them. Don’t worry about the casual hit seeking fans man.
Let it Shine, Natural Beauty, Red Sun, After The Garden, Union Man, Cripple Creek Ferry, Loose Change, Southern Pacific … all great songs that i’d love to see played (in case you wanted some more ideas). I also love hearing those brand new tunes.
Thanks DH + NYA

COASTAL
Yesterday I saw Coastal at Cinema Arts Cinema in Huntington, L.I. It was so worth the long drive. The filmmaking was well done plus of course Neil being Neil was spellbinding. What a gas to glimpse Joni Mitchell also. One of the Canadian Trinity (Joni, Leonard and Neil) never to be surpassed.

Daryl, “Coastal” is just stunning. Really beautifully conceived, filmed, and presented. Bravo! I’m so glad I was able to see it on the big screen!
An interesting little fact: In “Coastal” Neil mentions that the Coastal tour was the first time he had played to a crowd in nearly four years. When you do the math, it turns out that the last time Neil went nearly four years without playing to a crowd he was between 12 and 15 years old, before he started performing with The Jades at Earl Grey Community Club in Winnipeg.
That’s quite a career.

Dear Mr. Young and all, pleasure to last minute catch the in theatre movie in Miami of all places (is the Zuma plate FL?). Able to make the Bend, OR gig on a road trip with my youngest son last summer (also somewhat unexpected). Both absolutely brilliant. All thanks to make this happen. Movie made me feel I was on tour. Nicely done.

COASTAL
Hi Neil and especially dhlove,
Watched Coastal last night in a packed theatre. Daryl did an absolutely fabulous job in capturing the angst of going on the road after a forced hiatus due to covid.
I was at the July 1 (Canada Day) concert at the Ford Theatre and could feel the tension in the air before the concert began due to people sitting close together again after such a time lapse and concern for health.
Once the first chords of I’m the Ocean began a wave of relief rolled over me that all will be alright again in NY land.
Thanks Daryl for a wonderful experience of seeing Neil on the road with his driver, Ben, the dogs and yourself as we all experienced the journey back.

Hi Neil,
I had the chance to see “Coastal” at the Barbican Cinema in London last night. It is a fantastic film, beautifully captured with some stunning imagery. This is definitely one of Daryl’s greatest achievements so far, she’s a fine director with a brilliant cinematic eye. The performances captured for this film are both intimate and gritty, graceful and soothing. It’s great that you chose such an eclectic selection of songs from your archives, breathing new life and meaning into them and becoming new favourites. The banter with your crew, especially Jerry, is touching and hilarious! Definitely want to own this on Blu-Ray.
Thanks for this great, intimate portrait of you the artist and songwriter, the performer, the traveller and the good time companion.

Neil,
Congrats on the theatrical release of Coastal—I attended the screening in Edmonton, AB and it was well attended and many fans clapped and commented during the screening. It felt very interactive and it felt like we were really at a show. Please thank Daryl for her expertise and contributions to the film. It was special to experience.
Would you consider releasing and re-releasing films and live shows throughout your career from the archives in the theater silver screen format? It made for a fun night out and the sound quality was great.
Thanks!

FREE FOREVER
Hi Neil~
I noticed that you have not become one of the founding (free forever) members of the Consciously Evolving Community. Have you checked it out lately? I believe it is set up publicly at this juncture. I wonder why?
I’ve added a lot of my own writing and other nuggets, like special music. It’s like building my own archives devoted to the practice of Mindfulness. I’m having fun.
A large part of the information in the community is demystifying the practice. Mindfulness is a way of being, which affords more moments of peace, joy and contentment for the individual, despite the external and internal stressors. Mindfulness retrains the brain to focus on the vital life force, one’s breath and the present moment. Sadly, boundaries keep folks from joining. Often I meet a patient investing in their practice and I am not ‘allowed’ to offer it to them. Still navigating that obstacle. Others, are not interested. Honestly, I am not sure of your embracement and understanding of the practice, although I feel it.
I will be hosting a live (virtual) guided mindful meditation on 5/4/25 at 8am EST in the community and plan to offer other opportunities in the future, Q&A’s, and guests….
Thank you for assisting in deepening my practice, over the years.
Unfortunately, I did not get to theatre to see Coastal. I am looking forward to seeing it when it streams somewhere.
As always, thank you for taking your time to read my letters. Love and peace to you and yours.
Much love,
Linda
Thanks Linda

60 MINUTES
Hi Neil,
From what I have read, the issue with 60 minutes / Bill Owens stems from an interview where the editing swapped answers. The answers given to the actual questions asked were not the same when televised. Creditability is a HUGE requirement for me. I have no use for those who distort information in order to sway people to their way of thinking. Kind of reminds me of the joke where the lady was boasting about people saying she was pretty. What was actually being said is that she was pretty annoying. If presenting information that is inaccurate or distorted, is what independent journalism is all about, then it has no value for me.
My favorite line from a song is by Paul Simon’s ‘The Boxer’: “still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” My second favorite is from ‘Walk On’: “I can’t tell you how to feel.’ Seems to be a lot of that happening, so they can just go their way and I’ll go mine.
I’m not defending Trump. His actions and words have warranted the anger towards him. I just have no tolerance for lies.
Love

COASTAL SOUNDTRACK
Hi Neil
I’m sorry to say that the Coastal soundtrack on vinyl is a mess
Is there no quality control anymore ? Lookout Management could change its name to ‘Not on the lookout anymore’ or ‘Lookout People!’ There have been far too many mistakes getting through the net – “Nei Young” on Toast and “Takes Archvies.” And now this. WTF?
I love buying your albums on vinyl but they are not cheap and money is tight. I think it’s grossly unfair to have your loyal fans shell out for substandard product.
Will there be any remedy? Frankly I think you / warners should send replacements to anyone who bought the bogey version.
Maybe you should employ/engage some Rusties in vetting product before it goes out the door? Not the audio, just the print. Mistakes will be detected very quickly by eagle-eyed fans/volunteers.
The movie is great btw.
Take care

TOMORROW
Ask me tomorrow, about the fool I am today.
I’m in rough shape, but there seems to be an end to the tunnel, yet a world full of chaos on the other side. It’s hard times all the time. Go out and have a look, you’ll see what you want to see. I love, but in full disclosure I have no idea what that’s supposed to be. No idea what love is, is it to know or to know what’s not?
Always a fan,
Ryan.
Love makes you feel good.

LONEL 2328
Was that a Silver & Red Lionel 2328 Diesel pulling two passenger cars you had on stage during Coastal? (* I figured I’d cut to the chase as my previous letter in December was quite heavy )
My dad, who just turned 80 in February, gave me his childhood Lionel set (with the 2328) when I was a kid (* I was born in February 1970) growing up in my small northeastern Iowa town. We set it up on our ping pong table—one of these days I’m going to set it up again her in my St Paul home.
Trains were always kind of a big thing for me.
We had a neighborhood of about 7 kids ages 4–11 with the active Railroad track dividing our little homes from the farm and the creek on the other side. Let’s just say as unsupervised Gen X kids in the 1970s and early 80s—we took some risks and had a lot of fun (although in hindsight I am obliged to apologize to every train engineer )—anyway when my kids were little we inherited a bunch of Thomas the Train wooden tracks and buildings and such—a different feel than the Lionel, but still they are trains and we had fun setting up the tracks together.
I should also mention both of my parents (born in 1945) and their parents grew up just down the road from me (…er… 600 miles west down Highway 20) in the Nebraska Sandhills, where there was there a Roundhouse in Chadron (my dad’s hometown where my parents and mom’s siblings got their music teaching degrees—my mom’s oldest brother is a retired band director/cowboy poet).
— I’m kinda related in some way to like 1 in 5 people between Valentine and Chadron—the Nebraska Sandhills is some of the most beautiful and full of natural life areas I’ve ever been. (But I like my Minnesota north woods and Driftless Iowa a little bit better 🙂
For a while my grandpa Mac worked at the Roundhouse, but he was also Chadron’s #1 handyman—he was also one of the first to sign up in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 and became a Team Leader who drove his team to the job sites when they planted the Nebraska National Forest. One of his crew was Ernest Raoul Roose, who was an artist and later painted the official portraits of the Indy 500 winners—I have one of his early paintings which he made of my grandfather when they were both in the CCC.
Well, this was a much longer and more rambling letter than I planned, BUT ya know, we’re all human beings living together on this planet sharing stories and building communities.
Earth Day is tomorrow (well every day, actually) and my son turns 21 on Wednesday—and he is optimistic about the future AND working to make it so in the face of all the unnecessary invented strife.
I have to tell ya, I really loved Coastal. It was terrific experiencing it with my fellow musician/friends—the pacing was perfect—the conversations between you and Jerry on the bus were some of my favorite moments—an emotional human connection that brings ALL of us experiencing the film together.
And I loved how the cameras framed—it provided so much to take in without overwhelming.
I dunno, there is something very Charles Ives in sharing the total experience about it.
Well, that’s all from here. I gotta get back to practicing for some upcoming shows. Give everyone my love.

Xenia (she/her)

FILMS
Hi Neil, Daryl and all at NYA,
I came home last Saturday night after viewing to really inspiring films:
Penguin Lessons
and
One to One
Both films have an undercurrent of what could happen today at the hands of a dictator, and how to overcome the fear and obstacles that come with fighting oppression.
In Penguin Lessons, a true story about a teacher and a penguin that befriends him, the Perot regime in Argentina runs amok, and people are disappearing. In One to One, a documentary about John Lennon, culminating in The One-to-One concert that John did for the Willowbrook Institution, like The Bridge School.
Both highly recommended! And relevant today….
I am thrilled to see you demonstrating for Freedom from tyranny.
Peace, Love and Music!

COASTAL
Dear DH & NY,
My wife & I just saw ‘Coastal’ today, and we LOVED IT! The whole concept was spot on …The Bus, The Driver, and The Dogs, and Neil, all deserve a pat on the back, a gold star, and an atta boy as far as we’re concerned … It really is a joy to ride along on that Bus with All of you….
Being hardcore Neil Fans, it did not bother us at all to not hear all those Hits again … Goin’ on a deep, yet deeper dive on the obscuro songs was a cool thing to do … We also loved the fact that most of it was shot in B & W too … It added a nice touch to the ‘cinema verité’ film noir of the days of old ’50s movies we all love so much … Nice Touch & Compliments to The Director!
We just might go see it again. THANK YOU!!!!
Much love, Marc & Stacey B.

Hi Neil
I watched Coastal in Brussels. Thank you so much to Daryl and you for such an intimate portrait. It felt like we were with you on the bus, on stage, in the audience. What a beautiful testimony, filmed with so much love. No hyperboles, down to earth. Love earth.
I heard a few things in the movie and read some letters here. I can’t believe how some people are never satisfied—about the price of a ticket or the number of songs at a concert. Here’s a little antidote.
I’m filled with memories and gratitude for your music throughout my life. Dancing on Like a Hurricane as an adolescent. Recovering from heartbreak and finding consolation in My Heart during my twenties. Dancing on Comes a Time with the love of my life Iris—the opening dance at our marriage. Enjoying seeing you in Ghent playing Goin’ Home, where you spontaneously took Novastar with you for the entire tour. (Joost told all press how generous you were with the recordings of his show as a gift!) Ambulance Blues in the intimate Stadsschouwburg in Antwerp. Reading Waging Heavy Peace. The intense way you played Barstool Blues in Lokeren. The Alchemy Tour! Enjoying the lyrics of Thrasher. The sensitivity of Stringman. (Unplugged is a great record, I disagree with you, Jimmy McDonough!) Discovering the mind-blowing Neil Young Archives app. The preciously filmed Fireside Sessions during the dark COVID days. Seeing my essay on factory farming, with Jane Goodall, published in NYA. Listening to your records over and over again. Entering eternity when hearing the first notes of Cortez the Killer live. Relating to Days that Used to Be. Too many other songs to mention. Finding an ally in you on what matters for Earth and those living here. Pushing back on the greedy hand in the White House. Enjoying every minute of Coastal last week.
Looking forward to your open air concert in the center of Brussels in June. The venue outside sounds great, in front of the Palace and with trees nearby, and the price is right. And we’ll be thankful for each and every song.
Thank you, Neil, for your generosity, rockability and sensitivity. And Daryl. And Crazy Horse, Ben, Rick, Promise of the Real and the rest of the team, on and off stage. What a privilege. Keep on rolling!
Much gratitude and love from Belgium

BERLIN SOUNDTRACK
Howdy Neil-
As a 12 yo boy, I saw the BERLIN show on HBO. In the credits at the end, it said “Soundtrack available on Geffen records.” Well, I’ve been anxious waiting for that soundtrack for 43 years. What are the chances of it finally seeing the light of day? COMPUTER AGE & SAMPLE AND HOLD on that show are epic with the Trans Band.

CAPO
Hello Neil,
a few weeks ago I watched a show of Shawn Colvin on YouTube, which was recorded at the Paradiso theater in Amsterdam, 2007. Great show, and I was there too, in the audience. It struck me that many of her songs were played using a capo. That made me wonder why I have never seen you playing guitar with a capo. You must have one, because at least Campaigner is played at the third fret. When you go on tour, do you ever have your capo with you?
Greetings from a fellow guitar player, Jan
Yes, I take it with me but don’t use it much….

Greetings! Like many people, I’m wondering if NYA III will get a digital release soon. I buy everything through iTunes, including everything Neil has ever released in that format, which goes for Archives I and II. Do you know when I will be able to add Archives III to my collection? I know in the past you’ve put the whole thing up for streaming through your site as well. Any information you may have about this would be greatly appreciated. Viva Neil!
Thanks for the suggestion! we will consider it.

COASTAL
Neil:
Really enjoyed seeing the Coastal documentary with my daughter on Easter Sunday and was nice to spend a spring afternoon with you and your family. Outside of the great music, performances, and humor (an underrated part of your entertainment repertoire)—the way you took us on tour with you felt very personal. Been a while since I’d been on a road trip, and heading down the coastal highway on the bus was like living out a dream. My daughter was surprised that you actually felt nerves before playing a show, but considering the circumstances around the layoff, it was understandable, and another part of the film that made us feel like insiders. Daryl did a wonderful job filming and telling the story and Jerry Don is a superstar.
Thanks for another great ride and we’ll see you in New Hampshire this summer.
