"Sacred Cow"

by James Mazzeo, 1994

Acrylic on Canvas

“DON’T DRINK AND DRAW !! In 1994 I was going thru a divorce and painting some great stuff in my misery….one night I went to the bar and drank too many Mexican-coffees…too spin-a-roonie to lay down and pass out, I painted on a canvas until I could lay down without throwing up…when I came to, around noon the next day, I found myself staring at the best painting I had ever done…truly it was incredible it had it all… dynamic.. crisp… balanced to genius….wonderfully textured ….all the things I struggled over for years were accomplished in one wildly drunken night…it scared me looking at how truly powerful it was….and I thought to myself…I cannot show this to anyone…they will expect me to maintain this level of genius and I will have to become an alcoholic in order to succeed…so I painted black paint over the entire canvas and then painted ‘SACRED COW’ that same day on top of it….I have sold more prints of sacred cow than any other of my artworks to date and the original SACRED COW painting sold for $25,000 !!! The owner of SACRED COW knows the entire story and has looked into x-rays to see if he can reveal my hidden artwork…..I now limit my daily consumption to one drink a day unless it’s my birthday month and then I get 2 drinks followed by ginger ales….sometimes when I am out with a beautiful woman I pretend it is my birthday.  ” – Mazz
